2012 Darien Dash 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Walk Brings BIG Changes

The Darien Dash in the same place, on the same weekend in May every year but there are a lot of changes to this year’s race that people may not know.

 - The courses for the 5k and 10k have been changed so you’re not running the same path twice.

- The 5k and 10k are certified by the Chicago Area Runners Association.

- There is electronic timing this year with the timing chip inside each runners bib.  The runner’s time will not start until they’ve run over the start line and stops as they cross the finish.

-  All times will be recorded online and published later in the day for runners to view.

-  All kids who participate in the Fun Run will receive their own winner medal.

Positive Changes for the Darien Dash

The 12th annual Darien Dash race is always held the third Sunday in May at the Darien Community Park.  Runners can register to run the 10k, added last year, the popular 5k, or 1-mile race.  The Darien Dash may look like the same race but think again.

To start, the 5k and 10k courses have been changed since last year.  Jason Gabel, a member of the committee and runner himself, altered the course giving runners a new experience.  Gabel, along with 1st time committee member Julie Boruff worked together to certify both courses through CARA.  For those unfamiliar with the organization, CARA is the Chicago Area Runners Association and a key source for running information and races in and around Chicago.  A change in course and CARA Certification are two great changes to insure a great race but the last change affects runners the most.

This year the Darien Dash is electronically timed with timing chips in each runner’s bib number.  The timer starts when the runner passes the start line and stops in the stride over the finish; and all times will then be published on the Darien Dash website hours after the race.  For those running competitively, an awards ceremony will be held promptly at 10am to give trophies to the 1st place overall race finishers.  Kids participating in the Fun Run will be given their own finisher medals.

Veteran committee members agree this will be the best Darien Dash to date while first time members look forward to a great race.  The question is:  will we see you there?

Once again this year cash prizes will be awarded to the local schools and youth organization!  The race is on DARIEN DASH FOR CASH!  Which school will take home the CASH??
