Ann Romney & The American Mother: Mom Talk

Does the presidential hopeful's wife represent modern America?

It was pretty mild as far as political blunders go. After having read the entire transcript, I thought the statement was awkward but not offensive. Of course, had I been Ann Romney, I may feel differently.

Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen took a big swat at Ann Romney. Despite Ann's well-bankrolled lifestyle, she has five sons. So unless she had a battalion of nannies and staff, the woman must have worked very hard being a mom.

There is no doubt that Rosen was wrong and stuck her foot in her mouth when she said Romney never worked a day in her life. The next sentences of Rosen's statement softened the blow.

Rosen was making the point that Romney hasn't ever had an employer, she has never had to fight for wage equality, she has never had to worry about feeding her kids. In those regards, Romney does not represent the typical woman in the workplace.

Tuesday was Equal Pay Day. Rosen's right: the Romneys don't get it.
According to the National Women's Law Center, white women are earning a mere 77 cents to the white male's dollar. Our Latina sisters are getting hit the hardest with a pathetic 54 cents, and African-American women are at 62 cents.

When you clear away all the mudslinging, finger pointing and backlash, the facts are the same. Women are still taking it on the knuckles when it comes to trying to put food on our tables.

Having been a career woman turned stay-at-home mom, I moved my desk from the 44th floor to my kitchen table. Unlike either Rosen or Romney, I am in a great position to weigh in on this issue.

Motherhood is by far the hardest work. It is also the most rewarding. Rosen, yes, you need a time out for your statement. And Romney, you just settle your britches down, too. Your error was just as bad. You should have turned the spotlight where it needs to be: on the women who are working just as hard as The Man and earning only two-thirds.

Instead of all the childlike fighting at recess, we need to put on our big-girl pantyhose and keep our eyes on the ball. Or in this case, maybe it's not a ball. We need to keep our eyes on the doll.

Ann Romney gets paid nothing. She has lost the years of input into Social Security, if her husband were to have a financial disaster she would have healthcare and she would have no workplace experience to get hired. Essentially, she would have nothing to show for the years of running their household. I am pretty sure Ann Romney gets paid nothing.

How many other stay-at-home moms had $200 Million as a cushion?

I so miss the America I grew up in, when people were valued for who they are and not the amount of their pay check. I am a mother in the workforce, and I earn less money because I choose to put my family first and career second. Is that really that bizarre? We need to start valuing motherhood, and stop looking at everything as a dollar value...our children will grow up to be a lot more decent and productive if we do.

Cindy, you are correct. It is to bad that more mothers don't have that choice to choose to put more time and effort into the children. If they could and did the 'younger' generation would be much better than it is now. Unfortunately more women choose (or have to choose) to work instead of staying at home to raise the children. I can understand why they would do but it is a shame. Working is so much easier!

Hillary Rosen and the writer are so "compassionate" to their "low waged sisters." But they never disclose how much they are making!

Wow...this whole discussion feels like 6th grade playground. Don't lose a friend over politics this year. Non of these people are worth that. And it was a lot worse in the 60s. LBJ was the antiChrist in Texas where I grew up. He's already come and gone. And surely don't fall for the Democrats pandering to poor people.

I personally know one mom that has MS that was working, going to nursing school, and raising 4 children. I also have a friend that worked while having a child with multiple physical problems and ended up having her own physical problems that have not yet been diagnosed. The difference is that these ladies had no choice, they had to work. They didn't have the money or the option to be able to stay at home on the days they felt like they couldn't possibly handle a day at work. (And anyone who is a mom knows you don't get days off from that full time job.) My point is millions of women with various illnesses work and raise families everyday because they have to. People that haven't ever HAD to do that, can't speak about it. They haven't ever had to walk in those shoes!

marie b, therefore you are saying that unless one experienced a certain event or circumstance one cannot have opinions or ideas about them. Well, then nobody understands anyone else's plight because there are no 2 alike. And thus in marie b.'s world we come to a stand still. You have fallen in the trap...class warfare my friends. Distract is all democrats can do. They cannot run on their record since the country they created is collapsing.

The point really is, we should respect anyone that does any job they can. Staying at home to raise kids is important, working moms are important. What ever it takes, respecting the choice moms make.

In the year 2012, it is shameful that we still focus on working and non-working mothers. Just because Ann Romney has a nice lifestyle financially, doesn't mean she is out of touch with 'real women". She has a long history of dedicated volunteer work. Ann didn't and doesn't live in some ivory tower. Do people really believe Michelle Obama and Jill Biden are 'real women'?? Their kids go to private schools, vacation at Martha's Vineyard, etc.. So in actuality, this issue is a non-issue. Let's focus on the reeal issues of our economy and getting this country back on track and on top. Old Washington isn't working anymore and unfortunately, Obama hasn't done a thing to change things in that city.

They say Mitt Romney is behind in the polls with women yet people like Ms. Rosen, a democratic strategist, seem to disregard the importance of motherhood and raising our children to be good citizens. Cindy W above has it correct. If we, as Americans, would look at America today and perhaps do a study of the dysfunctional families of today as compared to those of the 50s I think we would find that when people put the workplace before the family our dysfunctional family count rose dramatically. Make no mistake, I am not putting the working woman down nor do I think she should make less money than a man doing the same thing. I am, however, saying that the choices we make with regard to raising our families have a direct impact on our children when they are adults. My wife made a decision to raise our children and work too. She did that by becoming a school teacher and began her career after the children were in school. She got the children off to school every day and was home when they got home. So to those who would find fault in others for their decisions to stay home with their children I say shame on you. Your children need their parents. Oh yes, by the way, men can raise children as well and they should play a major part of that equation.

When we will we reach the point that women respect each other? We are on the same team. We have let a male dominated political machine rehash a 20 year old argument. Now we are fighting amongst ourselves again instead of defending each other's choices. It is a fact that some women get paid less because they choose to leave the workforce for a time to raise a family. This gives them less years in the workforce to build experience and rise up the pay scale. So some of these statistics are skewed . . . it should be women who never left the workforce vs. men who never left the workforce. In skewing them, it pits working women against stay-at-home mothers. Both of whom made the best decision for themselves. What it does however is get GREAT ratings and sell newspapers.

It just amazes me how the media jumps on these types of stories instead of focusing on the real issues that our country is facing going into an election.

The fact of the matter is that there are very, very few politicians who are in tune with the average American. 47% of Congressmen and Congresswomen are millionaires. The other 53% are earning at least $174,000 a year.

The average American earns $26,364 a year.

So please tell me one person in Congress that can truly relate with the average American on those grounds? None. We all need to take our party blinders off, unite, and start working together to fix a broken system. Obviously our current elected officials cannot do that. Let's stop fighting amongst each other over stupid, unimportant statements like the one that inspired this opinion commentary.

Kelly, Why can't Romney feel empathy for women less fortunate than her? Don't you also want to help those less fortunate than yourself?
