Darien police charged a Westmont man Wednesday with two counts of armed robbery in connection with two separate incidents that occurred this week at a Darien Walgreens, police said.

Police detectives arrested James S. Pelton, 41, of the 1500 block of Crabtree, around 1 a.m. Tuesday at his home in Westmont, Police Chief Robert Pavelchik said.

Pavelchik said Pelton entered the Walgreens around 8:30 p.m. Sunday and again around 5 p.m. Monday. In both incidents, Pelton showed a knife to the clerk who was working at the register and demanded money, Pavelchik said.

During Monday's incident, Pavelchik said a witness followed Pelton out of the store and was able to give police a detailed description of him, as well as his license plate number.

Armed robbery is a Class X felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison. Police also charged him with one count of battery, according to the DuPage County Sherriff’s Office.

Pelton remained Wednesday night in DuPage County Jail, where his bail was set at $20,500, according to the Sherriff’s Office.
