Where is the organization located? 7400 S. Cass Ave., Darien, just north of Lace Elementary School.
What does the organization offer? The community-funded Safety Village of Darien is like a town within a town. Located on South Cass Avenue, the Safety Village is a miniature version of a town complete with streets and stop signs in which children can practice bike safety in realistic settings, minus the dangers of real streets.
When was the organization established? August 1988
When is the Safety Village open? Hours vary; visit the website for a schedule.
What is the focus of the organization? Teaching safety subjects to children ages 5-7 on subjects including pedestrian, traffic, 9-1-1, ID information (knowing their name, address, city, state, ZIP code, phone number, area code and parents first names), poison dangers, school bus, stranger danger, bullying, weather, water, bicycle, skateboards, scooter and roller blade safety, animal, railroad, driveways, playing near a street, playground, home, gun safety, parking lots, buddy system, Teddy Bear clinic (first aid), van safety, good touch/bad touch, seat belts, parked cars and fire safety.
What else should Patch readers to know about the organization? Classes for 8-10 year-olds teach Red Cross First Aid and Rescue Breathing, bike, skateboard, rollerblade and scooter safety. A police officer comes for an entire day and talks about his/her duties, peer pressure, bullying, Internet safety, home alone, stranger danger and latchkey concerns. The organization also conducts field trips and presentations for community groups.
