St. John Lutheran Church located at 7214 South Cass Avenue in Darien has opened a Safe Haven Program for area youth. The after school program is for students aged 12 and over attending Eisenhower Junior High School in Darien. It currently operates on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is no fee charged for participation.
The purpose of the after school program is to provide youth with productive activities in a safe, supervised, and structured environment while giving their parents peace of mind. Each session will include a nutritious snack, Bible-based devotion, tutoring and homework assistance, creative expression, and recreational activities. All tutors have had a background check.
Research has shown that effective after school programs generate positive outcomes for youth and their families including improved academic performance, better classroom behavior, increased school attendance, reduction of risky behavior, and promotion of good health and nutrition.
St. John Lutheran Church has served God and shared His love in the Darien community for over 150 years. Its state-licensed Early Learning Center has been in operation since 1969. The Safe Haven Program is seen as yet another way that the church can reach out to support and to strengthen the family unit.
