Community Corner

US Navy Submarine Sailors.

Steve Benicke on the right, a long time resident of Darien, was recently elected  Vice Commander, USS Chicago Base. On the left is outgoing Vice Commander, center is Lenny Kleinmark.  Vic Van Horn, District Commander, is officiating.   All are ex- US Navy submarine sailors   Chicago Base is a group of ex-submarine sailors who meet once a month to conduct Base business, share sea stories and lunch. The base is part of a National Organization, United States Sub Vets, whose web site is www.ussvi.org    They meet at 13:00 the first Saturday of the month at the Tinley Park VFW on Oak Park Ave.     The group consists of ex members of one of the nations elite fighting groups. They are now  involved in community service with a leaning toward assisting less fortunate veterans.     Activities include visiting ex-service men and women at  Veteran's Homes, and volunteer work at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.   Members act as facilitators for the German submarine exhibit, U-505, at the Museum of Science and Industry.  Anyone who is qualified to wear Dolphins or just has an avid interest in submarines is invited to check us out.    There is a free lunch for first time submarine veterans.  For more information can contact Don at 708 479-5150, DJSCHLEGS@aol.com, or check out our web site. www.usschicagobase.org
