A Love Affair With Pizza: Bites Nearby

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie," it means you need pizza.

Deep dish, thin crust, stuffed, pan, Chicago style, pizza pie—these words conjure up cravings even if you’re not hungry.

What is it about layers of baked dough, herbed tomato sauce and cheese that cause intense cravings in millions of people? Why does the presence of this food on Friday nights enthrall children, cause teenagers to gather and give such a bright spot to the end of the work week? 

Quite possibly, it’s the most versatile and fantastic food creation ever invented. (Regardless of who invented it and in what form, a topic that’s up for debate.)

If you Google the word pizza, there are 339 million results. Compare that to just over 7.5 million for French fries or 111 million for ice cream.

What is our obsession with pizza? Why can so many people eat it weekly or more? And who really cares about the reason anyway?

In the Darien, Lemont and Woodridge areas, there are almost 20 restaurants that primarily sell pizza.

Darien’s Mayor Kathleen Weaver will eat any veggies on her pizza, hold the meat. 

Next door in Woodridge, Mayor William Murphy goes for cheese and sausage pizza.

Lemont’s Mayor Brian Reaves likes to top his pizza with ham, pepperoni, mushrooms and onions. 

All the mayors’ combinations sound mouth-watering. 

And as the saying goes, the best thing to put into a pizza is your teeth.
