Capri Ristorante: Bites Nearby

When the mood for authentic Italian food strikes, check out Capri Ristorante in Burr Ridge or Downers Grove.

Although the original location in Berwyn opened by “Mama” Capri no longer exists, there are three family-owned Capri restaurants open in the Chicago area—, and Hoffman Estates. The owners, chef and general manager have been featured on the ABC-7 program Chicagoing with Bill Campbell.

The Burr Ridge location is tucked in the end of a strip mall and offers a warm, casual and elegant atmosphere. The inviting bar area beckons customers to linger before being seated or to stay and enjoy the evening.

Capri is well-known for its homemade specialties. Chef and part-owner Roberto Rovito highlighted several menu items for first time guests.

His suggestion for an antipasti (appetizer) is the calamari alla Capri—breaded calamari with olive oil, lemon, garlic and a hint of chili pepper.

“Our homemade rigatoni with vodka sauce is really popular,” Rovito said.

Other star selections are vitello san Giuseppe—veal layered with eggplant and homemade mozzarella and plate of the sea—shrimp, scallops, mussels (cozze) and clams (vongole) with broccoli, linguine and choice of sauce.

For dessert, Rovito said, “You have to try the tiramisu. It’s wonderful.”

The servers are also adept at choosing a wine that pairs well with each entrée.

Capri features live entertainment on the last Saturday of each month. It's open weekdays for lunch from 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and for dinner from 4p.m.–10p.m. Hours on Saturday are 4p.m –11p.m. and Sundays 2p.m.-9p.m.

Reservations are strongly recommended.

Catering and carry-out are available, and special events are a regular occurrence at Capri. This summer, Capri patrons can dine alfresco while choosing from a new summer menu.
