ComEd Warns Excessive Heat May Cause Power Outages

Commonwealth Edison is asking customers to manage energy use efficiently during excessive heat to avoid brownouts and power outages.

By Lorraine Swanson

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warningfor the Chicago region, with temperatures climbing into the high 90s, and a heat index of 100-degrees-plus on Tuesday.

Power usage will be at its peak as residents and businesses cool off with air conditioners, possibly causing brownouts or power outages in Darien.
ComEd encourages customers manage energy use efficiently while keeping cool during the heat.

  • Cool only the rooms in use
  • Run appliances like the dishwasher and washing machine at night.
Should you experience a power outage or brownout, call ComEd at 1-800-EDISON-1 (1-800-334-7661). ComEd can't fix a power outage unless customers report it, so be sure to call them.

Need a place to cool off? Here's a few nearby cooling centers:
  • Hinsdale Oasis, along I-294 just north of I-55
  • 146 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Villa Park
  • 2901 Finley Rd. Suite 109 in Downers Grove

Please also check on elderly loved ones and neighbors.
