Ideas for Celebrating National Night Out

Organize your own event to promote local crime prevention.

Since first established by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in 1981, National Night Out (NNO) has been linking communities across the United States in crime and drug prevention partnership with local law enforcement.

National Night Out always takes place on the first Tuesday in August. Suggested hours are from 7 – 10 p.m., but many communities adjust these to accommodate their activities.

According to the NNO website, the event has grown from 400 participating communities to last year’s record of 15,110. This year more than 15,500 neighborhoods are expected to participate in  events designed to foster spirit and crime prevention awareness.

Many neighborhoods also invite local law enforcement to their festivities to meet with community members.

Residents can keep their porch lights on during the evening to show their support.

Here are some ways Darien residents can organize their own events.

1) Organize a bike parade. Let kids decorate their bikes and ride through the neighborhood while onlookers cheer them on. Culminate the event with an assortment of “potluck” baked goods.

2) Invite the neighborhood to a local park for kickball. Make sure you check park hours and plan your event accordingly.

3) Host an ice cream social in a cul-de-sac. Unite the neighborhood for Popsicles, ice cream and camaraderie.

4) Hold a bags game tournament. A large open area is needed for this event, but rows of this favorite game are sure to be popular with all age groups.

5) Organize a neighborhood flashlight walk. Kids will enjoy this activity, and it’s simple to implement.

The website has many more ideas for National Night Out including registration for next year and additional materials.
