Concord Elementary School First Grade Native American Day

Despite the rainy weather and the need to move the Native American teepee contents indoors, the first grade students of Concord Elementary School recently celebrated a successful Native American Day.

Students explored Native American culture through a cross-curricular celebration of literacy, dance, art, and history. Through this unique educational experience, the children were given the opportunity to sit on buffalo and deer skins while learning about various everyday activities of the Lakota including tanning of leather, education of children, and teepee construction. 

In addition, noted Lakota historian, Jon Jordan, met with the children and discussed important Lakota values such as tradition, respect, and generosity.

The first grade children also learned how dance was an integral part of the Native American life.  They participated in their own Powwow, the oldest North American celebration, by learning the dances and percussion of the culture. Furthermore, the children explored the artistic side of Native American life in addition to reading books and exploring Native American storytelling.
