Kumon’s instructors use a strategy that encourages self-sufficient study in math and reading, Sinha said.

“Basically we want them to be independent learners,” she said. “We don’t want to spoon feed them all the time."

Students younger than 5 years old receive one-on-one lessons, while Sinha said older children work with instructors in small groups.

The reading program starts with phonics and continues with lessons in vocabulary, writing and reading comprehension as students progress, according to Kumon’s website.

Kumon’s math lessons begin with counting and go all the way through calculus, its website said.

Students are asked to complete various assignments with the teachers by their side as a resource.

“We want them to try to really start thinking and trying to tackle the problems by themselves first, and then we will help them,” Sinha said.

Parents interested in enrolling their children in Kumon’s program should call 630-747-6576 to schedule an appointment.

The new Darien center, located at 7511 Lemont Road in the Chestnut Court Shopping Center, will be hosting a ribbon cutting and open house from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. March 3.

During the open house, Kumon will feature activities for kids, including reading time and various raffles, Sinha said. The nonprofit Reading is Fundamental will also be on hand and has pledged to donate four books to children in need for every student that enrolls at Kumon during the open house, Sinha said.
