A 1978 Hinsdale South graduate and former Chicago radio personality is now better known for his success in his second career.
Darien resident Matt McCann is the Director of Business Development for ACSIA Long Term Care, Inc., one of the nation’s largest insurance agency’s that specialize in Long Term Care Insurance. Now in his fifth year in that position, following successful years one of the country’s top Long Term Care specialists, the agents in his division have been honored as among the best in the country.
The American Association for Long Term Care Insurance (AALTCI) lists the nation’s top specialists annually. ACSIA was represented as one of the top agencies in the nation with 35% of the top 100 specialists in the nation working with ACSIA. 61% of those agents came from McCann’s division within ACSIA including the nation’s number two specialist Mary Ann DeKing and the nation’s number four specialist, Wayne Reynolds.
“I am very excited and proud to have the best Long Term Care Specialists in the nation. Our agents are focused on outstanding customer service to help client’s find an affordable plan for the physical, emotional and financial burdens Long Term Care places on family and friends. I am proud they have been recognized by the AALTCI,” said McCann.
ACSIA and agents within McCann’s division at ACSIA lead the way in making the planning process easy and convenient. McCann says many of his successful agents use technology to make the planning process informative, safe and easy without pressure some insurance agents are known for.
“Many of our top agents use a process where the consumer can see the agent’s desk top on their computer screen. Then, on the phone, the consumer can get their questions answered and make an informed decision about an issue that is impacting so many families today and in the future,” McCann said.
Long Term Care insurance provides money and services to pay for extended health care at home, adult day care, assisted living or nursing home. Health insurance and Medicare (health insurance for people age 65 and older) do not pay for a majority of these costs. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, at least 70 percent of people over age 65 will require some Long Term Care services at some in their lives. Medicaid, the medical welfare program, requires a spend-down of assets which creates financial burdens on families.
“When I was an agent I helped thousands of families plan. Today, I help my agents help even more people plan. This has become a very important part of retirement planning. Long Term Care insurance is very affordable if consumers work with specialists who understand underwriting, how to design the plans properly and represent all the top insurance companies. The agents of ACSIA, especially those in my division, represent the qualities that consumers want and demand,”
McCann changed careers after a successful radio career which saw him work in a number of markets around the country including Champaign, Des Moines, San Antonio and Chicago. In Chicago, McCann worked at a number of stations including WLS-FM, WUSN, and WUBT. He may be best known working as legendary Chicago radio personality Larry LuJack’s sidekick when he returned from retirement on oldies station WUBT.
The Chicago native was a 1978 graduate at Hinsdale South High School in Darien. He later received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and has done post-graduate work at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL.
So what is more exciting for McCann, radio or insurance?
“I don’t think anyone considers insurance exciting especially compared to something like radio. I loved being in the radio industry and working for legendary radio stations and air-talents. But it is also very exciting helping families plan so they can protect their assets and be sure to never burden their family. Accidents, illnesses and the impact of aging can all cause a Long Term Care event. Since so many families are impacted, both industries are very rewarding in their own ways,” McCann said.
McCann noted he misses radio; the last time he was on the air was a fill-in on Chicago’s WLS (AM 890) a few years ago. However, he says the insurance industry keeps him very busy working with specialists around the country.
