They say hunger knows no season. They are wrong, at least in Illinois. Summer is the season of hunger, because that’s when kids who would be getting lunch and/or breakfast at school aren’t eating there. This puts an additional burden on low-income families, and leads to an increase in food pantry visits.
The Darien Rotary club, which exists to serve the needs of the community, has decided to help. Working with a grant from Rotary International, the Darien club donated $1350 to two local food pantries. The recipients, West Suburban Food Pantry and the pantry at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, will use these funds to purchase needed food items.
