Updated: City Prepares for Heat as Power Outages Continue

Four areas of Darien still without power.

1:39 p.m.

Power has been restored on Creekside Lane but is still out in parts of Hinsbrook, Marion Hills North, Farmingdale Village, and around 79th Street and Cass Avenue. Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren said there are unconfirmed reports of outages on Green Valley.

While Coren said the city doesn't know the exact number of homes without power, he estimates it's between 800 to 1,000.

ComEd expects to have power restored to 90 percent of homes by 12 a.m. Friday, Coren said.

It's focusing its efforts on critical services in other communities such as police and fire stations, as well as wastewater treatment plants and senior citizen facilities, Coren said. All such facilities in Darien are fully powered.

Coren also reminded residents that they are responsible for repairing service drops—that is, when the line connecting a house to the main power line goes down.

If that line is down, residents must call an electrician on their own so there isn't a further delay after power is restored to the area.

ComEd said this is the worst storm for power outages since 1998.

10:09 a.m.

More than 24 hours after a battered Darien with winds upwards of 65 mph, at least four areas of the city are still without power.

All ComEd crews are out around the Chicago area trying to restore power, but Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren said he's been told it could be as long as another two days before all of Darien's power is back on.

"It's not looking great right now," he said.

The affected areas in Darien include parts of the Hinsbrook neighborhood, Creekside, Marion Hills North, and a section around 79th Street and Cass Avenue.

With heat bearing down, it's getting pretty miserable in a lot of homes, Coren said. Highs today are supposed to hover around 85, according to the National Weather Service, which could be hazardous to the elderly or those with certain medical conditions.

The city is preparing generators for individuals who need emergency power for medical equipment or other necessities, Coren said. Anyone who is suffering a heat emergency should call the city 630-353-8105.

has also opened up meeting rooms to serve as cooling centers. The library will be open until 9 p.m. Tuesday.

According to ComEd's outage map, more than 10,000 customers in the Bolingbrook region, which includes Darien, are still without electricity.

Yesterday more than 868,000 customers were without power in and around Chicago, ComEd said. There are still about 368,000 customers awaiting restoration.
