Spring Forward with this Weekend’s Time Change

Turn your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard it either, but it’s already time to turn our clocks forward.

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, so be sure to move your clock ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

Although the time change means one less hour of sleep this weekend, it does mean one hour more of daylight as we head closer to spring.

The DuPage Health Department offers these tips for taking care of yourself through the time change:

  • Use the extra hour of daylight in the evening to go for a walk, begin your gardening when the weather is a little warmer or begin a new outdoor hobby such as golf or tennis.
  • When you move your clocks forward one hour, it’s also important to check or change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
  • Be careful when you go back to work on Monday, March 12. Many drivers lose an hour's sleep resulting in a marked, one-day increase in roadway collisions. Drowsy drivers cause deaths, injuries and lost productivity, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Those types of incidents typically surge 17 percent on the first workday after Daylight Saving Time each year, according to a study by the University of British Columbia. Drive defensively on Monday.
