Study Ranks DuPage Third Healthiest County in Illinois

The county scored well in healthy behaviors and clinical care.

DuPage is the third healthiest county in Illinois, according to rankings released Tuesday by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. 

The county came in first in the state in terms of healthy behaviors, which include a low percentage of smokers and a high rate of physical activity compared to the rest of Illinois.

Only 15 percent of DuPage residents smoke, compared to 20 percent statewide. More than 80 percent are very physically active, compared to 75 percent across Illinois.

DuPage also fared well when it came to clinical care, coming in second in the state. Only 10 percent of the county’s population is uninsured, compared to 15 percent across the state. There is one primary care doctor for every 524 residents, while the state ratio is one doctor per every 778 residents.

The county faltered, however, when it came to environmental factors. DuPage ranked 51, smack in the middle of Illinois’ 102 counties. Environmental factors included access to healthy food and density of fast food restaurants.
