Outage Update: Power Back Up in Most of Darien, Some Parts of Marion Hills Still in the Dark

Numerous funnel clouds, 70 mph winds reported in Naperville, elsewhere in Chicago suburbs.

June 23, 9:20 a.m.

Power has been restored to most of Darien, said Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren.

A two block area in the Marion Hills neighborhood, near Rte. 83 and Plainfield Road, is still without electricity, he said.

"We're trying to get more detail on when power will be back up in that area," Coren said.

ComEd is saying that power is expected be restored to 90 percent of Chicago-area customers by midnight Thursday, with the remaining 10 percent getting power back by midnight Friday.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, ComEd said 91,752 customers were still without power in the Chicago area.

Between 3,000 and 10,000 of those customers are in the Bolingbrook region, which includes Darien.

June 22, 11:26 a.m.

Portions of Darien may be without power for "multiple days," the city said.

Darien officials said they received a release from ComEd on Wednesday morning that said they have restored power to many homes in the area, but it may be a while before crews get to others.

Around town, numerous branches and larger limbs are down but most have already been placed curbside. 

Crews are still working on the downed power line situation at North Frontage and Bailey Roads. A tree brought down wires Tuesday night in front of the Carmelite Priory.

The Panera on Route 83 and Plainfield in Willowbrook is packed with people on laptops who are without power in their homes. People are also using the cafe to charge cell phones and other small electronic devices.

8:51 a.m.

Deputy Police Chief Dave Skala said there are still scattered power outages in the southwest and southeast portions of Darien, but the city doesn't have an exact count.

Two intersections are without power, so use caution around Cass and Concord, as well as Cass and North Frontage Road, he said.

A large tree with a wire attached to it is down near Bailey and North Frontage Road, which will take a while to clear out. Avoid driving in that area.

The great news is no injuries or structural damage were reported, Skala said.

"We didn't get hit as hard as some of the other towns," he said.

As part of the cleanup, the city will be extending brush pickup through June 29, said Municipal Services Director Dan Gombac. More dates will be added if necessary.

Residents should bring any downed branches to their parkways, Gombac said.

7:38 a.m.

More than 10,000 customers are still without power in the area Wednesday morning, ComEd reports.

June 21, 10:18 p.m.

ComEd is reporting more than 10,000 customers are without power in the Bolingbrook region.

10:05 p.m.

Trees are down throughout Darien and the police department is getting numerous calls about power outages, said records clerk Steve Highland.

"The phones are boiling over," he said.

is reporting "too many [power outages] to count" in Darien, according to one dispatcher.

Fire Prevention Bureau Director Robert Morris said his department is getting reports of power outages south of 83rd Street, as well as numerous trees down. He said the damage, however, is not too severe.

8:23 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for DuPage County, effective until 9 p.m.

Rain-wrapped tornados and strong winds are possible, NWS said. A funnel cloud was spotted around 7:05 p.m. on Route 59 in Naperville, five miles north of Interstate 88, according to NWS reports.

The NWS says the storm has produced winds stronger than 70 mph in numerous locations, including around 8:30 p.m. in Naperville, where there has also been reports of damage to trees.

Fewer than 50 locations are without power in the Bolingbrook region, which includes Darien, according to ComEd.

Patch readers are reporting sirens going off near 75th Street and Clarendon Hills Road in Darien, as well as near 75th Street and Lemont Road near the borders of Woodridge, Darien and Downers Grove.
