Our Lady of Peace School kicks off Catholic Schools Week with an open house this Sunday, Jan. 29, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. My kids are very excited. This year, more than any other, I am too. They’ve worked hard, and this is their time to shine and be proud of their hard work and their school. Because I feel their excitement and hear them counting down the days, I’ve made an extra effort to gather family and friends to share the afternoon with us.
My oldest is in the final stretch of her grade school years. This year I think back to visiting Our Lady of Peace School as a perspective family.
I remember all the schools we visited and how seriously we took this decision. We were not only making a choice for her, but for the whole family.

Visiting open houses gave us insight to the families, teachers and academics at each school we visited. We learned a lot more than what the building looks like on the inside. We concentrated most on the kindergarten. As an experienced school parent, I would tell you to look at what the junior high students are learning also. I am amazed by the level of learning going on throughout the school and the dedication of the teachers and students.
I like that Jesus is part of my kids’ daily lives at school and that they are taught math and faith.

At the end of the day, we came away most impressed with Our Lady of Peace School. We gained a lot of information about what the school offered and felt the warmth that our kids would gain from its staff. We were blown away by the scientific research presented at the science fair held simultaneously in the school gym. I now know which laundry detergent is actually best.
Selecting the right school for your kids is a tough decision. It may be years before you know it was the right decision. I now have the perspective of an experienced Catholic school mom, I share my knowledge with newer families and I am happy with our choice.
