OBITUARY: Edwin E. Tomei

A Darien resident since 1969, Ed was alderman of Ward 4 from 1977 to 1985 and served as the fire and police commissioner for three years. He was named Darien Citizen of the Year in 2000.

Edwin E Tomei was born Jan. 3, 1943, to David and Kathryn Tomei. Ed and his older brother (Davide) and Sister (Phyllis) lived in Oak Park. He was a graduate of Fenwick High School, class of 1960, and attended St. Norbert College in West DePere, Wisconsin. Ed was introduced to his wife of 48 years while attending college and they were married on Sept. 19, 1964.

Ed worked in the family business, Affiliated Insurance Consultants, starting in 1967. He remained at Affiliated through the merger in 1997 with USI Insurance Services. Ed was a Senior Vice President of sales until he retired in 2010.

Ed and Sharon started their married life in Oak Park and moved to Westchester when they started a family. They moved to Darien in the summer of 1969. Ed’s public service began in Darien, where he was alderman of Ward 4 from 1977 to 1985 and served as the Fire and Police Commissioner for three years. Ed was awarded Darien Citizen of the Year in 2000. 

Ed was an active member and chairmen of the West Suburban Chapter of Ducks Unlimited for more than 11 years. He was also a member of the Hinsdale South Booster Club and Hinsdale Jaycees.

Ed was married to his loving wife and partner, Sharon (Kovarik) for 48 years.   He was a devoted and loving father to three daughters, Jeannine (Michael) Eicker; Julia (Kenneth) Kohnke; and Jinger (Andrew) Stevens; adoring grandfather to six grandchildren, Noelle and Zoe Kohnke, Jeremy and Tatjana Eicker and Gemma and Luke Stevens.
