Court Watch: Misconduct Trial Set for Downers Grove Cop

A weekly roundup of activity in DuPage and Kane county circuit courts.

DUPAGE:
Downers Grove:
A former Downers Grove police officer charged with official misconduct is scheduled for a March trial on charges he illegally ran license plates. Randy Caudill is set for trial on March 20 before Judge George Bakalis. Caudill was arrested in 2010 after an investigation revealed he improperly checked license plates in what has been called a plot to rob a drug dealer, according to prosecutors.

Kane County:
Batavia/Geneva:
A Batavia teen recently pleaded guilty to a felony marijuana possession charge connected to a September arrest in Geneva. Devin Alsip was sentenced to two years of probation, 30 hours of public service and was ordered to pay $3,500 in fines and costs as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Additional charges of criminal trespassing and growing marijuana were dropped in the deal. Alsip was arrested after police found him with a bag full of pot on railroad property.

St. Charles:
A March trial has been scheduled for an Aurora man who was charged in St. Charles last year with punching his girlfriend and stealing her purse. Victor Torres has pleaded not guilty to robbery and aggravated domestic battery related to the June incident. Torres recently had a domestic violence charge dropped in DuPage County after the same woman failed to cooperate with prosecutors. His Kane County trial is scheduled for March 21.

One suspect in a 2010 home invasion is also scheduled for trial this spring. Sam Aunner, last of Chicago, is accused with another man of breaking into Adams Avenue residence in November 2010 and tying up two men with electrical cords as part of a robbery. Aunner, charged with home invasion, armed robbery, aggravated unlawful restraint and possession of a weapon by a felon, is set to stand trial on April 30. Aunner's co-defendent, Redrell Bradley, is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on March 8. Both men remain in Kane County Jail.

A second man initially accused of impersonating a police officer last year has been placed in a pre-trial diversion program. Jeff Stolzenburg was recently granted placement in Kane County's Second Chance Program after prosecutors reduced a felony charge to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Stolzenburg and Michael McSweeney were originally accused of making siren noises and yelling through a loud speaker to tell other vehicles to pull over on Randall Road. In separate deals with prosecutors, each man acknowledged making loud noises out of a vehicle's speaker system that disturbed at least on driver, records show. Stolzenburg must complete 50 hours of public service as part of the program's requirements to avoid a criminal conviction on his record.
