Darien, Downers Grove Hit with Phishing-Scam Phone Calls
The Darien Police Department is warning residents not to trust phone calls claiming to be from a bank and asking for "verification."
Several residents of Darien and Downers Grove were targeted over the weekend by automated calls that appear to have been part of a “phishing” scam attempt, the Darien Police Department said Monday.
The robo-calls purported to be from an unspecified bank alerting residents that their debit cards had been compromised before gradually requesting various personal information, including account and PIN numbers, police said.
“We’re not aware of any losses right now, but it seemed to be tied to at least one of our local banks,” said Darien Police officer Greg Cheaure. ““We don’t want to see people let their guard down… these types of scams happen on the Internet as well.”

Cheaure said that seven calls were reported in Darien—meaning “there were likely many more who didn’t call us”—and that calls were reported in Downers Grove as well.
All residents targeted by the calls appeared to share a similar bank; police did not say which bank.

Darien police are reminding residents to notify or contact their personal banks if they receive any such phone calls, and to not give out any personal information.
