Sgt. James Borsilli was with the Darien Police Department for 24 years.

Sgt. James Borsilli, a 24-year veteran of the , died Sunday after a year-long battle with cancer, Mayor Kathy Weaver said at Monday’s City Council meeting. He was 48 years old.

“He was one of the rare people you could count on no matter what,” said Ward 4 Alderman Joerg Seifert, a close friend. “It didn’t matter what was going on his his life. He would jump at the chance to help you out.”

Throughout his illness, Borsilli maintained an incredibly positive attitude, Seifert said.

Borsilli is survived by two sons, his mother, sister and brother.

A wake is scheduled from 2-9 p.m. Thursday at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301 75th St., Downers Grove. A viewing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Church of Oak Brook, 501 Oak Brook Rd. in Oak Brook, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Borsilli will be buried at Mary Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

On April 20, Seifert said he and other family friends will be holding a fundraiser to set up a trust fund for Borsilli’s sons.

The police department will retire Borsilli’s badge number, 301, as a tribute to his service, Weaver said. The city will also fly its flags at half-staff for seven days.
