Elderly Woman's Home Ransacked During Ruse Burglary

A man posing as a contractor distracted the woman while two other men entered the home, Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown said.

A home was ransacked and several items taken during a ruse burglary Wednesday afternoon, Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown said Friday.

Two men entered the home around 2 p.m. while a third man distracted the owner by walking with her to the side of the house to discuss home repairs, Brown said.

The woman, who is in her early 80s, noticed the two men sitting in a maroon van when she came back around to the front of the house, he said.

She went into her home and discovered that it had been ransacked, he said. Several possessions were missing, but Brown said the woman is still in the process of creating a list of what was stolen.

While it’s unclear whether this burglary is part of a pattern, Brown said there have been a few other incidents during the past three months during which men posed as workers to gain entry to homes.
