Electrical Fire Evacuates Darien's Farmingdale Apartments

No injuries were reported, but one apartment building remains without power and unlivable as of Tuesday night.

The following is a press release from the Tri-State Fire Protection District:

[Updated: As of 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, power had been restored to the 7503 Farmingdale location and residents were being allowed back into their unites. Initial time estimates by property management for repairs to be complete is one to two days for power restoration at the 7513 Farmingdale building.]

On July 8, 2013 at 8:52 p.m., the Darien Police and Tri-State Fire Protection Distrct responded to an electrical fire at the Farmingdale Apartments, 7513 Farmingdale Drive, Darien. The fire was contained to the building’s transformer box which was located in the underground parking garage.

Tri-State FPD initiated a box alarm for mutual aid assistance to evacuate the building. Responding fire departments included Darien-Woodridge, Downers Grove, Westmont, Hinsdale, Pleasantview, Clarendon Hills, Romeoville and Western Springs. 

Once the building was safetly evacuated, Com-Ed shut down electric service to the 7513 building which also shares the transformer to power the 7503 building. Residents in both buildings were evacuated due to immediate fire safety concerns as well as no electricity. There were no injuries reported as a result of the electrical fire. The apartment leading office management made arrangements for the residents to stay in area hotels or with family or friends.

[The] Darien Public Works supervisor responded to [the] scene for an on-site evaluation of the situation.

Darien Police remained on-scene until 12:52 a.m. Tri-State Fire District cleared around 3:00 a.m.
