Man in Bartlett Police Custody May Have Ties to Speedway Robbery

Chicago police arrested the man last week and turned him over to Bartlett police for a similar crime that took place in that suburb, Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown said.

A man in police custody in Bartlett may have a connection to the May 25 robbery of the Speedway on Lemont Road in , Police Chief Ernest Brown said.

The man was arrested in Chicago last week in the process of buying drugs, Brown said. Chicago police turned the man over to Bartlett as a suspect in a similar robbery that took place in that suburb, which is roughly 30 miles northwest of Darien.

During the Darien incident, brandished an “edged weapon” and demanded the Speedway clerk open the cash register, according to police reports. The man took $500 before fleeing the scene, police said. Police described him as about 5-feet, 3-inches tall, 155 pounds, possibly Hispanic and roughly 25-years-old.

Brown said he expects the man in custody will be charged in the Bartlett crime and Darien detectives are investigating whether to also charge him with the Speedway robbery.

Brown declined to release further information, pending the investigation.
