Police Blotter: Intervention Turns Violent, Pet Supplies Lifted from Walmart

Sunday, Jan. 16

Shoplifting at Walmart

Cynthia P. Sperka, 45, of the 20W200 block of Meadow Lane in Lemont, was arrested at the 75th Street , according to the . Sperka took a coat from a rack, put it on and went to the pet section, where she took off the price tag, according to the report. Then she put pet supplies and some personal hygiene items in a zippered Walmart bag, police said. Although she paid for some items, police said she did not pay for 16 items that totaled $156.02, including the coat. Police charged Sperka with retail theft–shoplifting.

Snowman disappears

A three-foot-tall snowman was stolen from the front yard on the 7100 block of Summit, police said. The snowman was valued at about $100.

House egged

Vandals egged a house on the 3300 block of Drover around 9 p.m., police said. The homeowner said this was the third time his home had been egged. The eggs caused about $100 worth of damage, according to the report.

Saturday, Jan. 15

Domestic battery

Brian P. Morefield, 18, of the 6800 block of Bantry Court, was arrested at home, police said. Morefield physically confronted family members after he came home Saturday and his family approached him with concern over his alcohol use, according to the report. Morefield was charged with two counts of domestic battery and one count of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, police said.

Destroyed mailbox

Someone destroyed a mailbox at a home on the 100 block of 67th Street, police said. The vandal probably used a baseball bat, according to the report. The mailbox was valued at about $150.

Friday, Jan. 14

Stolen instrument panel

A man returned to his semi truck’s cab parked at 1000 South Frontage Road to find that the driver’s side instrument panel was missing, police said. There were no signs of forced entry. The estimated value of the panel was $1,000, according to the report. 

Mail theft

Someone took a FedEx package containing a printer toner cartridge from an unlocked mailbox at the on 75th Street, police said. The cartridge was valued at about $160.

Wednesday, Jan. 12

Car burglary

After a man left his car keys in an unlocked locker at on Lemont Road, he returned to the car to find his wife’s wallet and cell phone missing, according to police. The report did not list an estimated value for the items.

Stolen purse

A woman’s purse was stolen after she put it in the child seat of a shopping cart at the Cass Avenue . She noticed her purse was missing when she went to check out. The purse and its contents are valued at $610.
