Police Blotter: Motorcycle Theft; Two DUIs Near Cass and Interstate 55

Sunday, Sept. 11

DUI near Cass and I-55

Roque Gonzalez, 27, of the 2400 block of South Sawyer Avenue in Chicago, was arrested about 3:50 a.m. near Cass Avenue and Interstate 55, said. Police said they saw him swerving over the center line and driving for about 100 feet on the rumble strip. He also was speeding 76 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to the report. When officers pulled him over, they said Gonzalez smelled like alcohol and had red, glassy eyes. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test, according to the report. Gonzalez was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane use and speeding, police said, and given an Oct. 11 court date.

Mailboxes vandalized during DarienFest

Several mailboxes were damaged during DarienFest on the north and south sides of the 700 block of 72nd Street leading to , police said.

Saturday, Sept. 10

DUI near Cass and I-55

Daniel Mercak, 36, of the 6800 block of South La Grange Road in Hodgkins, was arrested about 1:55 a.m. near Cass Avenue and Interstate 55, police said. Officers saw him weaving within and beyond his lane, as well as driving on the shoulder, police said. When they pulled him over, his breath smelled like alcohol and he had red, glassy eyes, according to the report. Police found one empty and one cold Miller Lite can under the front seat, according to the report. Mercak’s Breathalyzer test recorded blood-alcohol levels more than three times the legal limit, police said. He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, driving without a license, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane use, police said, and given an Oct. 17 court date. 

Friday, Sept. 9

BBs shoot out car, house windows

Vandals shot at two cars and a house with a BB gun about 11 p.m., police said. The vandals shot out the rear window of one of the cars and damaged the rear trunk body and cracked the side taillight of the other, police said. They also shot out a double-pane window on the house, according to the report. Total damage was estimated at $750.

Vandals strike Culver’s

Vandals shattered three large glass windows overnight at the on Plainfield Road, causing about $1,500 in damage, police said. 

Wednesday, Sept. 7

Car burglarized, items scattered

A number of items taken from a car parked in the driveway of a home on the 1500 block of Norman Drive were found scattered on neighboring front yards about 7 a.m., police said. It is unclear how the burglar got into the car, from which he took a wallet, radar detector, Leapster video game system and games, and multiple credit cards, police said. The items were valued at about $1,970. 

Motorcycle theft

A 2007 Suzuki GSXR 600 motorcycle with Illinois license plate CR2044 was taken overnight from the driveway of a home on the 7600 block of Hayenga, police said. Anyone with information should contact detectives at 1-630-971-3999.
