Police: Man With Alcohol Levels 4.5 Times Legal Limit Crashes into Mailbox

Police say paramedics were called to the station because of the man's high alcohol levels.

A Darien man was charged with two counts of driving under the influence after running into a mailbox at the intersection of 72nd Street and Western on Saturday night, said.

After William J. Smith, 48, of the 700 block of 71st Street, got out of his car, police said he couldn’t stand without support. Officers caught him as he fell several times, according to the report.

Officers had to help Smith into the police station, where they said he fell off a stool during booking.

Paramedics were called to the scene after Smith’s blood alcohol level tested four-and-a-half times the legal limit, police said.

Smith refused to be treated and police released him to his wife, according to the report.

He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence and given a Nov. 11 court date, police said.
