Police: Rash of Car Burglaries Hits Darien

Seven crimes involving motor vehicles between Feb. 17-20.

The  is warning residents to lock their car doors and keep valuables out of sight after seven car burglaries occurred in Darien between Feb. 17 and 20.

The burglars are shattering windows to take items that have been left in open view in cars parked in public lots that don’t have cameras, police said. 

Police remind residents to remove valuables from their cars, or keep them hidden. Report suspicious activity to 911.

The recent burglaries the police reported are: 

Thursday, Feb. 17

A woman’s purse was stolen from her unlocked car around 10:05 a.m. when she went into the Cass Avenue Speedway to pay for gas. The suspect fled the scene by traveling east on 75th Street, according to the report. The loss is valued at about $600.

Saturday, Feb. 19

A burglar broke out the back window of a car parked outside the Dunkin’ Donuts on Cass Avenue around 7:35 p.m. and stole a purse that had been left on the back seat, police said. The value of the purse and its contents are unknown.

A thief smashed the rear passenger window of a car parked in the Darien Sportsplex lot between 6 and 7:45 p.m. They then stole a black leather laptop case with an IBM laptop inside and took an iTouch from the car’s center console, according to police. The items’ total value is about $2,500.

Sunday, Feb. 20

Someone broke the rear passenger window of a car parked outside XSport Fitness on Lemont Road between 7:30 and 9:15 a.m. and stole a purse sitting on the rear floor, police said. The purse and its contents are valued at about $1,800.

A burglar shattered the front side passenger window of a car parked outside XSport Fitness on Lemont Road between 1:30 and 9:15 a.m. and took a purse, a GPS and an iPod, according to police. The items are valued at $1,100.

A thief smashed the driver’s side window of a car parked outside Culver’s on Plainfield Road between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. and stole a purse, police said. The purse and its contents are valued at $2,000.

Someone broke the driver’s side window of a car parked outside Indian Prairie Public Library between 2 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. and stole a purse, according to police. The purse and its contents are valued at $400.
