Police: Teen Drives into Tree, Mailbox, Lawn

Christopher Maka, 19, was charged with two counts of DUI, police said.

A Darien teen was charged with two counts of driving under the influence Feb. 12 after he drove into a tree and a mailbox before stopping in the front yard of a home on the 6800 block of Richmond, said. 

Christopher Maka, 19, of the 6700 block of Alabama, swayed back and forth as he spoke to officers about the early morning incident, police said. He smelled strongly of alcohol and had red, glassy eyes, according to the report. He told police he had been drinking at a friend’s house, the report said.

Officers said they also found marijuana hidden inside a cigarette pack.

Maka’s blood alcohol levels were two times the legal limit of .08, according to a Breathalyzer test.

In addition to the DUI charges, Maka was charged with cannabis possession, illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, driving on a sidewalk and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He was given a March 13 court date.
