Overnight Fire Tears Through Ron Sandack's Legislative Office (UPDATE 2:25pm)

Downers Grove office building on Warren was destroyed early Monday.

UPDATE 2:25 p.m.

According to optometrist Dr. Janet Walser, who has had her office in that building since 1986:

The tenants received a call from the building's owner, Debbie Wendell, at about 6 a.m., informing them of the fire. She was told a resident of the Oak Tree Towers, located across the street north of the office building, saw smoke at about 1:30 a.m. and called the fire in. Tenants gathered on the north side of Warren Avenue to try to assess the damage from a distance this morning.

Based on the scorch marks on the exterior of the building, it's believed the fire started on the second floor of the southwest corner of the building. Tenants have not been allowed back into the building, and won't be until it's determined to be safe.

Dr. Walser's office was located well away from the apparent location of the fire, but she's  likely to have water damage.

UPDATE 2:15 p.m.

The cause of a early morning fire at 1121 Warren is still under investigation as of 2 p.m., according to DGFD rep Marsha Geisler.

Most of the damage to the building took place upstairs, and it is unknown what will become of the building, as there are concerns regarding the building's stability, Geisler added.

UPDATE 2 p.m.

From the DGFD:

(Downers Grove, IL) On Monday, March 12, 2012, the Downers Grove Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call at 1:43 a.m. for the report of fire extending from the roof of a two story brick office building at 1121 Warren Avenue. First responding units arrived at 1:46 a.m. and reported thick smoke in the neighborhood and extensive fire coming from the roof. Early in the initial attack on the fire, companies discovered the roof structure weakening. A section of the roof collapsed and firefighters were ordered to leave the structure and continue their attack from the exterior. The building was unoccupied during this time. The building did not have a sprinkler system nor was it connected to the village fire alarm board. Due to the aggressive nature of this fire, it was upgraded to a second alarm. The fire was struck at 4:32 a.m. and no injuries were reported. The Downers Grove Fire Department was assisted by the Lombard, Argonne, Hinsdale, Oak Brook Terrace, Darien Woodridge, Naperville, York Center, Oak Brook, Bolingbrook, and Westmont fire departments. Other agencies assisting with the response were the Downers Grove Police Department, Public Works, and Community Development departments. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The legislative office for Ron Sandack, current 21st district state senator and Republican candidate for the 81st state representative district, was destroyed early Monday in a fire, according to officials.

No one was in the building at 1121 Warren Ave. near downtown Downers Grove during the fire, which was reported around 1:48 a.m., according to TribLocal.

Officials saw “extensive fire coming from the roof, as a thick pall of smoke blanketed the neighborhood," TribLocal reported

Sandack tweeted around 5 a.m.: "Tough start to the day. Rec'd call @ 3:15 a.m. that the building where my legislative office is housed had a major fire. Could be total loss..."

"... Am told fire personnel just left- lots of water used & there's a partial roof collapse. That's all I've been advised," he said in a subsequent tweet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

You can still contact the office at 630-737-0504 or senatorsandack@gmail.com.

Sandack began serving as a village commissioner for Downers Grove in 2003 and was elected mayor in 2007. He currently serves as a state senator for the 21st district, having been appointed last fall to replace Dan Cronin, who was elected DuPage County Board Chairman.

Also running for the 81st District Republican nomination is , who currently serves as the vice president of the  school board.

Including parts of Downers Grove, Darien, Lisle, Woodridge, Westmont and Naperville, the 81st district constitutes half of the previous 47th district. Patricia Bellock, who currently serves the 47th district, has decided not to run for the 81st, so there is no incumbent candidate.
