Trial, Jury Selection Under Way for Borizov Trial in Darien Murder

The trial for conspiracy in the murder of three Darien residents in 2010 is the first ever in DuPage County to allow cameras in the courtroom; it is expected to last up to a month.

Jury selection began on Tuesday in the trial of Johnny Borizov, 32, of Willow Springs, for orchestrating the March 2010 murder of Darien residents Jeffrey, Lori and Michael Kramer, the Suburban Life reports.

According to the paper, jury selection may take as long as the rest of the week, and the trial could take as long as a month.

The trial is notable for being the first in DuPage County history to have cameras—one video and one still—allowed in the courtroom, the Chicago Tribune reports. Jurors will not be photographed or video-recorded, and the presiding judge will rule on Tuesday whether or not certain testifying witnesses will be.

"What happens in court is serious business and not entertainment," the paper quoted DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin saying last week. "I am in full support of transparency in the courtrooms. We just have to be sure that by allowing cameras in the courtroom we are not jeopardizing the integrity of the judicial process."

The Kramers were shot to death in March 2010 by Jacob Nodarse in a scheme, prosecutors allege, plotted by Borizov and meant to kill Angela Kramer, daughter of Jeffrey and Lori, sister of Michael, and father of Borizov's son.

Angela Kramer was in the house at the time and survived by hiding in a closet and dialing 911, officials have said.

Nodarse pled guilty in 2011 to a single murder count in a deal with prosecutors to secure his testimony against Borizov. Nodarse faces a minimum of 45 years in prison when he is eventually sentenced after testifying.
