Warrant Issued for Darien Man Charged with Hate Crime

Ali Akel indicted recently in connection with June gas station incident in Woodridge.

A judge this week issued a no-bond warrant for the Darien man accused of using a racial slur against a man during a June .

Circuit Judge George Bakalis put out the warrant for 32-year-old Ali Akel after he didn't attend a Monday hearing, according to court records. Akel recently was indicted on two counts of aggravated battery and one count of committing a hate crime after officials said he attacked a black man inside a Woodridge gas station June 20.

Akel had been free on $10,000 bail, but Bakalis ordered his bond be forfeited. He was scheduled to appear in court again Aug. 29, when he would likely be arraigned.

Court records show Akel has a of domestic issues leading to protective orders against him by family members. He's also faced criminal charges ranging from damaging his family's home to trying to steal a $210,000 sports car.

Akel successfully graduated from the county's drug court earlier this decade but has been described by family members as bipolar and on medication, according to court records.
