Amendment up for debate in Darien tonight would allow city administrator to also perform police chief's duties.

The village of Glen Ellyn has not finalized its decision on which of its , including Darien City Administrator Bryon Vana, will be its next village manager.

An administrative assistant from the Glen Ellyn city clerk’s office said Monday that the village has neither made a choice nor set a date for filling the position.

Current Police Chief Robert Pavelchik is retiring at the end of the month.

A memo related to the ordinance that would amend the code cites the “economy and increasing costs” as the driving force behind the move.

Pavelchik earned $125,133, plus deferred compensation, during fiscal year 2011, which ended April 30, according to Darien Accounting Manager Paul Nosek.

Vana earned $128,544 plus deferred compensation during the same time period, Nosek wrote in an email Monday.

The draft of Vana’s new contract, also to be considered Monday, includes a salary of $154,547, plus deferred compensation totaling 13 percent of his salary.

The agenda for the upcoming meeting said the contract “reflects the terms discussed by the Council on May 9,” the same day as a special meeting that was closed to the public.

Both Vana and Mayor Kathleen Weaver declined to comment prior to Monday’s meeting. Vana did post this comment on an earlier Darien Patch story about the ordinance up for discussion Monday:

No innovative idea in government should be summarily dismissed. All I ask is that you first become informed on the topic before deciding if you think it is a good or bad idea. My guess is that residents will have opinions on both sides of the issue. You are encouraged to attend tonight’s council meeting so you can become better informed and participate in this discussion.

Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
