Watch: Darien Aldermen, Police Chief Discuss Local Gun Control

Police Chief Ernest Brown told the City Council on June 17 of their options for a local assault-weapons ban and a city gun-registration law.

Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown addressed the City Council at the June 17 council meeting on the subject of how the City needs to respond to the passage or veto of an Illinois concealed-carry law, telling the Council that local municipalities like Darien will have just 10 days after either to pass their own statutes on gun control.

(The discussion takes place from through 24:30 through 33:15 in the above video of the June 17 City Council meeting.)

Brown warned that any local statute can't preempt the larger law, which rules out any local bans on handgun ownership or concealed carry, but said that options remain open for a local assault-weapons ban or a local gun-registration law.

"One of the things that I had suggested was a firearm registration for Darien. It would give us a couple of things: an indicator of who in the city had firearms, for one... It also generates a revenue stream as well," Brown told the Board.

"We need to be laser-beam precise on what we want or don't want."
