Results from DuPage County Health Department inspections show Darien schools are largely in compliance with health codes.
The inspections are done using a standardized procedure, and each school is given a demerit for each violation.
In the case of the health codes, “the lower the score, the better,” said DuPage County Health Department spokesman David Hass.
“Ours is a reverse system,” he said. “A real low score is real good.”
The highest number of demerits given to schools in Darien was five, while most of the cafeterias got zero. More than a hundred violations can be given.
“Five or less is probably almost perfect,” Hass said.
Some health code violations inspectors look for include making sure equipment is in working order, workers are sanitizing the area and washing their hands, and making sure the foods are kept and served at proper temperatures.
“Our staff in the kitchen work really hard on a daily basis to keep our kitchen up to the health code expectations,” said Lisa Lantvit, principal of , which got zero demerits. “When the health department comes to visit, they’re looking at a lot of different things and our department of food staff employees are dedicated, hardworking ladies who really want to do what’s best for the kids.”
Principal Marty Casey lauds the efforts of his staff at in , which received 0 demerits.
“Our cafe workers do a great job keeping our kitchen clean and follow all health rules to make sure food is served to our students in a safe manner,” he said. “In addition, our custodial staff cleans our gym floor each day to insure a clean and welcoming lunchroom environment.”
in did not receive any demerits during its inspection.
Principal Christine Marcinkewicz said she is not surprised.
“The maintenance of our facilities in general is phenomenal,” she said. “People take a lot of pride in what they do here so it doesn’t surprise me the cafeteria would end up with a perfect score.”
