Lace Students Learn about Life on the Front Lines during Veteran's Day Assembly

The students watched a live feed from a Darien resident who is serving in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan probably seems like it's a world away to most elementary school students in Darien. But brought the sacrifices U.S. soldiers are making overseas a little closer to home Thursday during its Veteran's Day assembly.

Administrators arranged for a live video feed from Afghanistan so students could hear a little bit about life on the front lines from Commander Provenzano, a Darien resident on his third deployment.

Lace's nearly 560 students sat at rapt attention during the presentation, which, in addition to Provenzano's brief talk, included a speech from his wife about the responsibility everyone has to help make the world a better place.

"Many times schools take Veteran's Day off, but we think it's more important to make the connection between our veterans and our freedom," said Principal Martin Casey. "Especially if we can personalize [military service], it has so much more meaning for the kids."
