Lace School Awarded $1,000 for Darien Dash Participation

The school received the award for having the most participants in the race.

Marty Casey, the principal for in Darien, was presented a check for $1,000 from the Darien Chamber of Commerce Monday night. The school received the award at Monday night's City Council meeting for having the most participants in the Darien Dash this year.

The Darien Dash is held every year on the third Sunday in May. The race is organized by the Darien Chamber of Commerce and raises funds for the community of Darien and it surrounding communities.

"[The race] brings the whole Lace school together—the staff, students and parents all have a common goal to work for ... We set a goal each year of having the most participation of each school in the community," said Casey.

Casey estimated that 120 students in grades three to five participated in the Darien Dash this year, along with their parents and other family members.

Local schools and youth organizations are eligible for Darien Dash prizes. According to the race website, organizers award $2,000 to local schools and $500 to local youth organizations or boosters with the most registered participants.

Casey said four Lace Elementary School teachers helped coordinate the school's participatation in the race this past May. They were:

  • Cami Nicol, Physical Education teacher
  • Nina Offerman, 3rd Grade Teacher
  • Kim Schultz, Reading Specialist
  • Janel Luna, 5th Grade Teacher

Casey said the $1,000 the school received would go toward purchasing instructional and athletic equipment.

"It helps us buy things we couldn’t normally afford," said Casey. "We've sponsored assembly programs with this money, helped defer the cost of field trips ... the extra assistance goes directly back to the students."
