Students at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South who want solar panels installed on the roofs of both schools have raised approximately $85,000 for the purpose of making that happen, acting District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law said during Monday night's District 86 Board of Education meeting.
The fundraising effort has been spearheaded by the ecology clubs at Central and South, and the ultimate goal is to raise $100,000.
"They have a little ways to go yet to have solar panels installed," Law said.
At Monday night's meeting, the board unanimously approved nearly $8,000 in donations that included one from John, Stephanie and Tristan Nevotne for $5,000 and one for $2,500 from an anonymous donor.
"We applaud these schools on their collaborative efforts to raise funding for this environmentally friendly project and we thank the donors for their generosity," a memo to the board from Law reads.
Law said that the panels would save the district on energy costs and require "minimal" maintenance.
