Students to Take to the Track for 24-Hour Relay

District 86's annual relay fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, to 10 a.m. Sunday, May 22, at Hinsdale South.

This weekend, nearly 300 District 86 students will take to the track and football fields at Hinsdale South High School to take part in the annual 24-Hour Relay fundraiser.

The goal of the event, planned by and involving both and Hinsdale Central students, is to raise money for local charities as well as community and school groups within District 86.

This year’s relay will be held from 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, to 10 a.m. Sunday, May 22, at Hinsdale South. Students participate in teams of six to 12 people.

“At least one person from the team is walking or running for the entire 24 hours,” said Andrea Smith, family and consumer science teacher at Hinsdale South High School and coordinator of the event.

Forty percent of this year’s proceeds will be donated to community organizations and 50-60 percent will benefit groups and programs within District 86.

This year’s charities are The People’s Resource Center of DuPage and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Student participants raise money up front for their team’s entry fee.

The 24-Hour Relay Challenge has become a community affair.

“Various business and organizations donate food, money or volunteers for the cause,” Smith said.
