Boys Basketball: Hinsdale South Can't Close Against Proviso East

Proviso East 75, Hinsdale South 67: Pirates' 22 steals sink Hornets, erase 27-point first quarter.

The Hot Read: A 27-point first quarter by Hinsdale South’s Hornets went for naught. The Pirates forced 22 steals and tied the game at 32-all by halftime, then widened their lead in the third quarter and controlled the game the rest of the way. The Hornets came close a few times in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates’ aggressive halfcourt defense and athleticism were too much, forcing costly turnovers at inopportune moments for the Hornets.

Patch’s MVP: Proviso East point guard Keith Carter scored 22 points and had seven of his team’s 22 steals on the night. If he wasn’t scoring, he was setting up his teammates at the top of the key.

Key Stats: Down 27-16 after the first quarter, the Pirates recorded six steals in the second quarter—three of them by Carter—and tied the game at 32 by halftime, erasing the deficit.

Quotable: Hinsdale South coach Vince Doran: “We had a great start to tonight’s game, but against Proviso, you have to fight like crazy not to give up easy baskets, and, unfortunately, that’s what we did tonight.”

Records: Hinsdale South: 14-8 overall, 5-4 in WSC Gold. Proviso East: 16-3, 6-1.

What’s Next: The Hornets are off until next Friday, when they play a home conference game against Addison Trail. The Pirates head on the road Saturday to play rival Proviso West.
