Football: Hinsdale Central Routs Hinsdale South In Rivalry Game

Hinsdale Central 28, Hinsdale South 7: Owens' three touchdowns, 300 total yards leads Central

, a week removed from scoring 60 points in a wild victory over Leyden, found themselves shut down on offense in a 28-7 loss to crosstown rival . This is the Hornets' fifth straight loss in the annual matchup between the two schools.

Their only success on offense came on their second play of the game. Running back Keontae Hall powered his way up the middle, broke several tackles, and marched down the field for a 74-yard touchdown to put the Hornets (3-3, 2-1) up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Red Devils (4-2, 1-2) quarterback Brian Owens took over from there. He led a successful 70-yard drive on their next possession. Receiver Tom Garvin scored on an 11-yard pass up the middle to tie the game back up.

On the last play of the first quarter, Owens pulled a brilliant fake handoff and stormed down the sideline, scoring on a 55-yard QB sneak with no time left. They missed the PAT, though.

The Hornets were able to slow the Red Devils down a bit in the second with a missed field goal from 30 yards and a failed attempt by Owens to score on a QB sneak from the Hornets’ 3-yard line on 4th and goal.

Owens finally broke through with a 10-yard TD pass to receiver Brad Anlauf with 56 seconds left. Owens scored the 2-point conversion on a draw to put them up 21-7 at the half. RB Ryan Kelleher later would score on a 10-yard pitch in the fourth to put the game away for good.

While the Hornets struggled to contain Owens, who had 205 yards passing and 105 yards rushing, on defense, the offense had their own problems. QB D.J. Deolitsis threw several rushed passes and the running backs had a hard time getting past the front four. Apart from Hall’s early play, the Hornets found themselves backed up quite often.

“We had a couple of breakdowns tonight,” Hornets coach Michael Barry said. “We sometimes let our emotions get the best of us and that led to some mistakes on our end.”

The Hornets look to rebound next Friday for their homecoming game against Morton. The Red Devils play at Oak Park-River Forest next Friday.
