Host Dukes come out fast, furious

Riding the wave of emotions that come with the football season's home opener, the York High School Dukes pounced on the visiting Hornets of in a 39-14 win.

The victory evens the Dukes' record at 1-1 on the season.

“The thing about this week was after the disappointment of last week, our focus was to play better on defense and on special teams,” head coach Bill Lech said.

Senior wide receiver Jordan Preuss caught three touchdown passes to lead the offensive onslaught. Senior place kicker Sean McDaid nailed a pair of field goals, including a 44-yard attempt. And the defense came up with a score on a interception returned to the house by Jake Rzeszutko.

York brought energy early, forcing a fumble on the opening kick and scoring on the team's first possession. senior D.J. King coughed up the pigskin at the 18-yard-line, setting up York's first score. That set up Preuss' first touchdown, which came on the game's first possession on a fade route thrown perfectly on the sideline from senior quarterback Joe Lucca.

's offense was only able to convert one first down before having to punt, putting the ball back in Lucca's hands.

Preuss picked up the Dukes' second touchdown in as many possessions with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter. Lucca hit his senior wide out with a quick hitter near the goal line, putting York up 13-0 with his second touchdown throw.

The Dukes made pay for a botched punt that put York at its opponents 18-yard-line, when running back Ken Boesenberg finished a short drive by plunging in from 1 yard away on fourth down, giving York a 19-0 lead with the half's final score.

McDaid's two field goals and Preuss' third touchdown grab helped negate D.J. Deolitsis’ 8-yard touchdown run, which put the Hornets on the board with 4:47 remaining in the third, and Devonte Washington's 4-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter.

The road test for the Hornets was a struggle throughout the evening. After winning the coin toss and receiving the ball first, lost a quality opportunity to seize momentum when D.J. King fumbled the opening kick.

The Hornets’ woes continued as their defense allowed touchdowns on York's first two possessions. Offensively, struggled to find any rhythm, as it was shut out in the first half.

was unable to find the red zone until the 4:56 mark in the third quarter, and scoring shortly thereafter on Deolitsis' touchdown run on a quarterback keeper.

“Now, we'll move on to next week,” head coach Michael Barry said to his team after the loss. “This is part of a building process.”
