Cass Junior High School Celebrates Earth Month

Cass Junior High Students expanded their understanding of climate change, green cleaning, and recycling during the April 19th team building day.

Cass Junior High School in Darien, celebrated Earth month in April through a variety of activities.

On April 19th, Cass students spent the day learning about climate change.  ACE (Alliance for Climate Education) visited Cass to give a multi-media presentation.  From www.acespace.org: “The ACE Assembly is at the heart of our mission to educate, inspire and activate students to curb climate change and its effects, because we believe young adults can make a meaningful impact now.”

Students also rotated through various stations that focused on green cleaning, conservation, and recycling.  The following is the recipe for the green cleaner that each student brought home:

What are these ingredients and what do they do?

1)   Water is water.

2)  White vinegar: An antifungal that also kills germs and bacteria.

3)    Borax: Borax, the common name for the natural mineral compound sodium borate, eliminates odors, removes dirt, and acts as an antifungal and possible disinfectant.

4)  Pure essential oils: Adding all-natural, organic essential oils to your cleaning concoctions can add wonderful scents to your housekeeping endeavors. Some—such as lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and tea tree oils—also may have antibacterial, antifungal, or insect-repelling properties

**As with any cleaning product, natural or not, avoid getting in your eyes or ingesting.  We can’t eat everything in nature.

Finally, as of April 30th, Cass was in 7th place for their bracket in the Dream Machine Recycle Rally Nationwide Contest.    The students of Cass Junior High recycled more than 107,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans since August of 2012.
