Giving Back: American Red Cross, Scarecrow 5K, Teaching Opportunities
There are plenty of ways around the area to volunteer and contribute to society. Below, some upcoming opportunities.
WHAT: ESL Teaching Opportunity
WHERE: St. Joseph Services, Bolingbrook

WHY HELP: Volunteers are needed to help teach basic English skills to adult students. Assigned classroom workbooks will be provided, and volunteers will have orientation and observe a class before teaching.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Volunteers must be older than 18 and make a minimum six-month commitment, with at least two hours of in-class class and a half-hour of preparation per week. A 10-hour online training will be required. Volunteers also should be prepared to shadow two classes prior to teaching, and must provide a copy of their resume and two professional references. Volunteers also need to pass a background check and be accepting of other cultures and beliefs. Bilingual volunteers are preferred, but not required.

LEMONTWHAT:

WHY HELP: The event raises funds for the Lemont Township Family Assistance Fund.

LISLEWHAT: Seventh annual Scarecrow Scramble 5K run/walk

WHEN: 5:30 p.m. Oct. 15
COST: Registration before race day is $30 per person for 5K runners and walkers; $20 for the Youth Run; and $8 for the Tot Dash. There is no charge for children younger than 10 years who walk the 5k race with their parents.
WHY HELP: Race proceeds will benefit the Characters Count and Partners for Parks programs.
REQUIRED SKILLS: The run is open to those ages 7 and older and will feature a children’s race.

WHAT: Lunch Time Helpers
WHEN: Lunchtime on weekdays
WHERE: Ecumenical Adult Care, 305 W. Jackson Ave., Naperville
WHY HELP: Volunteers are needed to help frail senior citizens stay on task while eating a meal. Volunteers also will support socialization.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Volunteers should be able to encourage conversation while helping senior citizens eat their noon meal. Volunteers also should have good food-handling techniques.

WHAT: Chicago Wilderness Corporate Council Day of Service

WHY HELP: Volunteers are needed to clear brush and collect native seeds.Children ages 8 and older are welcomed if accompanied by adult.

WHY: The pantry serves residents throughout DuPage County. You can donate approved food or personal care items or money at any time. You can also volunteer stocking shelves, doing clerical work, translating, picking up donations and more.
