Robert Klein Named Darien Citizen of the Year

The Citizen of the Year Committee made the announcement at Monday night's City Council meeting.

recognized Robert Klein at Monday night’s meeting as the Darien Citizen of the Year.

Ward Four Alderwoman Carolyn Gattuso, the staff liaison between the Citizen of the Year Committee and City Council, read a letter detailing Klein’s multi-layered involvement in Darien and the surrounding area.

Klein’s service to the community runs deep. He serves as chairman of the board of the and is a former president of the foundation. He’s also a regular volunteer at the substance abuse program at Hinsdale Hospital.

Klein’s also an active businessman as president of Bolingbrook-based Award Emblem Manufacturing Inc. Even through his work, he gives to others by donating trophies to Hinsdale South High School.

“This was a job well done by the committee,” Mayor Kathleen Weaver said.

Klein is a longtime member of the Darien Rotary Club. One person wrote in his nomination letter, “Through his unselfish dedication and concern for fellow citizens of Darien, he has given many hours of his time and personal resources through the Darien Rotary Club.”

Klein will be honored during two upcoming events. City Council will hold a cake and coffee reception for him during its Feb. 22 meeting. And the Annual Citizen of the Year Dinner will be held March 5 at . Tickets will be available from after Feb. 1.

The Citizen of the Year Committee selects its winner from a pool of nominees submitted by Darien residents. Each year’s winner must participate in a variety of activities, demonstrate deep commitment and make an impact on the city through their good deeds.

Kathy Abbate, Kathy Lyons, Fran Mazzolini, Mona Stone and Theresa West served on the Citizen of the Year Committee.
