Darien Dash Races into Town

There are a number of new features to this year's race. Also inside: An interactive map of the courses.

More than 400 runners are expected to stream through Darien’s Hinsbrook neighborhood Sunday for the 12th annual Chamber of Commerce Darien Dash. The springtime tradition, however, got a bit of a facelift this year. For the first time, runners will be timed more precisely with an electronic chip inside their bib. The chip will trigger the timer once runners pass through the starting gate and shut off as soon as they cross the finish line. The Darien Dash also got an endorsement this year from the Chicago Area Runners Association. The seal means that it’s a high quality race and that CARA members can earn points toward distance and participation awards. Though the race will start at Darien Community Park, from there runners will follow new …

Hornet Hustle 5K Supports Hinsdale South Athletics

The race is scheduled for April 15 in Darien Community Park.

The stadium scoreboard, baseball field renovations and wrestling room murals at Hinsdale South all share one thing in common: The Hinsdale South Athletic Club paid for them.  On April 15, the club will continue to support the high school’s athletic programs by hosting the Hornet Hustle 5K, one of its two major annual fundraisers. “(The Athletic Club) has been wonderful,” Athletic Director Tim Feigh said. “They’re able to purchase the large-ticket items that a lot of times the school district can’t pay for.”  This year’s race starts at Darien Community Park and loops 3.1 miles through the neighborhood to the west. The event is open to both runners and walkers. Kids can get in on the race-day action, too, through the Youth 1-Mile Race or the…

Find Out What You're Made of at the Monster Dash

The Monster Dash will test your chutzpah and fitness at the same time.

There's a lot to anticipate about the upcoming fall season. The last couple of fall-like days have spurred on thoughts of pumpkins, falling leaves and my favorite holiday, Halloween. While I'm not much for haunted houses, I do enjoy a good scary movie. And my friend's annual Halloween party is always a fun and creative event. Fall is also a great time to intensify your workout, or perhaps get started. The cooler weather definitely lends itself to great running. We can make up for the lethargy that set in during the month of July, as workouts were adjusted downward in order to last in the extreme heat. So whoever came up with the idea of the Monster Dash is simply brilliant - let's combine the fun of Halloween with an active running event. …

Lace Elementary Staff Dashes Its Way to Fitness

The staff at Lace Elementary engages in a friendly fitness competition that concludes at the Darien Dash.

Lace Elementary P.E. teacher Cami Nicol had been thinking of ideas to jump-start a staff exercise program. She wanted it to be simple—not too much of a time constraint—and something that would culminate in the completion of the 5K Darien Dash May 15 at Darien Community Park. Nicol devised a plan and with the help of  band teacher and administrative intern Joey Bonanotte recruited a total of 50 Lace personnel.  The participants divided into eight teams made up of six or seven staffers that are engaged in a friendly competition, which began Jan. 28 and will end May 12, just before the Darien Dash. Each member logs his or her time spent exercising and reports it to the team captain on a weekly basis. The team captain then tallies the total …
