Athlete of the Week: Bolingbrook Defensive Back Parker Westphal

Sophomore defensive back making name for himself.

By the voting deadline for this week's Athlete of the Week (9 p.m., Nov. 30), Bolingbrook's Parker Westphal had 73 percent of the votes, making him the clear winner. What a week for Parker Westphal. Who? Westphal, Parker, sophomore defensive back for Bolingbrook's varsity football team. Check that—state-champion football team. No slight to Westphal, but the playmaker doesn't pop up much in Patch archives or Google search results prior to the Class 8A title game, during which he recorded four tackles and two sacks in the Raiders 21-17 victory over Loyola Academy. Westphal helped anchor a defense that forced two turnovers, had three sacks and held Loyola to 182 yards of total offense, a new IHSA 8A record. And now this on the rising star, …

Athlete of the Week: Bolingbrook's Football Team

Individual contributions lead Raiders to state championship.

By the voting deadline for this week's Athlete of the Week (9 p.m. Nov. 22), the Bolingbrook football team had 92 percent of the votes, making it the clear winner. It would be easy to regularly nominate Aaron Bailey for Patch Athlete of the Week honors. Bolingbrook's quarterback, a heavily recruited junior, leads the team in offensive production every game and his numbers are good enough to stand toe-to-toe against any of the state's top performers. Last week, Bailey actually garnered Patch's weekly award and could have again this time around on the strength of 199 rushing yards and a game-winning touchdown. This week's about the Raiders though -- all of them -- because it took all three phases of their team to beat Naperville Central on …

I was a state champion swimmer in the 100 free and the 100 free ancor to a state champion medley relay team. I was also a quarterback that led my team up to the quarterfinal playoffs. The press I received from the two sports was night and day! Not much publicity from swimming but tons of coverage from football. Back page for football, small blurb for swimming. Swimming athletes, in general, are …   more ›
