Murbach, a forward for the soccer team, is the latest athlete to be interviewed in the weekly series.
Hinsdale South forward Kyle Murbach delivered when his team needed him the most Tuesday. He scored two second-half goals against Willowbrook — including the game-winner with less than two minutes left — in a wild 6-4 victory. The feat is even more amazing when you realize Murbach is, in fact, deaf. He doesn’t play or act it, as Hornets coach James VanDenburgh will tell you. “He earned a starting spot out there today,” he said. “I admire how he plays. He plays with such intensity, every second he’s out there. He’s a hell of an athlete and a good guy too.” His second goal came less than 30 seconds after Willowbrook tied the game at 4 on a controversial penalty kick. The Hornets, undeterred, rallied on a free kick that caromed off the …

The outside hitter for Hinsdale South's girls volleyball team is the latest addition to the weekly series
Hinsdale South junior Jessica Brezwyn’s spike at the start of Game 1 against Willowbrook on Tuesday set the tone very quickly. The ball hitting her hand sounded like a rifle had just been fired. The ball slammed the gym floor with authority. “She (Brezwyn) can bring the thunder when she has to and she can put some emotion into her shots and get the team fired up,” Hornets coach Lisa Martinez said. Brezwyn put plenty of emotion into her shots and into her role as outside hitter with four kills and a service ace en route to a 25-6 Game 1 victory that took less than 10 minutes. She played solid defense in the Hornets’ 25-18 Game 2 win and had five kills and two service aces overall. She is Darien’s Athlete of the Week. How long have you …

Sachs, a junior for the golf team and a state qualifier, looks poised for very good things on the golf course.
Hinsdale South junior Jessica Sachs makes the game look easy and fun on the golf course. While others are cursing their luck at an errant drive that wound up in the water, she’s out there laughing, having fun with teammates and opponents alike. Her confident mindset helped her qualify for state last year, and she looks poised to make another run. She was solid on the Downers Grove Golf Course on Friday, carding a 42 in her match against Downers Grove South. Coach Julie Sweet sees the potential: “There’s a big improvement over last year. She’s played a lot of tournament golf over the summer. She’s hitting the ball with much more consistency and she’s hitting a lot farther than she did last year.” With Sachs at the helm and leading the …

Hinsdale South senior Kim Warpecha has qualified for state in tennis twice and has worked her way back up again through back surgery and other injuries. She hopes to lead the Hornets to another conference title and maybe even more.
Hinsdale South senior Kim Warpecha has had a high school tennis career filled with high and lows. The highs? Qualifying for state twice. And the lows? Having back surgery, forcing her to miss all of 2009. As Hornets coach Dana Graczyk will tell you, however, she is one tough athlete. “She’s the hardest worker on the team. She’s really come back strong in practice this year. She’s a good kid and a good student.” Returning from back surgery is no mean feat and has derailed many a tennis career, but Warpecha’s determination, hard work and athleticism have paid off. So far in 2011, she is 4-2 in doubles matches, including her 6-1, 6-2 win over Downers Grove North with partner Andrea Wakim. She is Darien’s athlete of the week. How long have …
